The interns gave their final presentations on Friday, and they were all amazing!! Although I am sad that the internship is over, I am very grateful to have been given this opportunity to learn and pursue a topic that I find so interesting and have been studying for the last two years at school. I am also really happy that I was able to calculate an additional six "n" values that support the conclusion that there is a correlation between the speed of CMEs and their exponent values. My research provided further evidence than published in a prior journal article because I found and analyzed CMEs of various speeds where the journal article's scientists only analyzed three CMEs, two slow and one fast. I think that it was a very successful summer and that my data can contribute to more precisely being able to predict when a CME will hit Earth.

I want to give a huge thank you to Dr. Dube for being my advisor this summer. He was incredibly helpful and patient, and his passion for his work while mentoring me was very inspiring. I am fortunate that he has offered to stay in touch and continue to advise me as I further my research back in Connecticut. I want to thank Bethany and Bob for heading such an awesome internship program and for making the summer so much fun. I also want to thank Joe Pow, Elizabeth, Killian, Nate, Billy, and Matt for inviting me to work in their lab this summer. They were a really fun group and I am going to miss them a lot!! I am going to miss all of the other interns too, but I am optimistic that we will stay in touch. To have been able to spend an entire summer working with these great people and helping to further research on a topic that I love was truly a special opportunity! Thank you to all who made it possible!!

I had a really great day today! I came into work this morning extremely nervous to present in front of Bethany, Bob, and the other interns. While I was presenting, though, I realized it wasn't really that bad and by the time I finished I thought I had done a pretty good job! I got some good criticisms and I spent the rest of the day making final edits to my PowerPoint. After I finished the presentation and gave the updated version to Bethany, Simran, Sara, Mary Emma, Mia, and I all took a little tour of the campus and took a lot of great pictures for me to bring back to Connecticut. I am really sad that tomorrow is the last day because I loved going to work everyday and I loved hanging out with all of the interns. Tonight I tried a garbage plate for the first time too! A lot of the interns had been telling me to get one, but I always said no because it just sounded so gross. However, I was surprised that it was actually kind of good, and I am glad that I did something special to Rochester on my last night here. All I can do now is hope tomorrow goes well!

I finished the PowerPoint today!!! I typed out an entire script that has the most important points that I want to cover for each slide, and now I need to go home and review it a few times so that I am comfortable to present tomorrow and then again on Friday! I am glad that it is done and that I feel good about the material because it has made me a lot less nervous about tomorrow! We also had Christmas in August today, which was basically just a Secret Santa, and Sara brought in an actual Christmas Tree! It was super fun and Elizabeth gave me Giants flip-flops, a Giants rubber ducky, and a Giants bracelet! I am so excited for the football season to start and now I have all this great stuff!!! Tomorrow we are all going to sit down and do a run-through of our presentations, so hopefully I present well so that I have no worries going into Friday!

Today I just continued to work on my presentation.  It is really coming along and tomorrow I hope to just add some finishing touches!  I am still trying to decide whether it would be best for me to write out a script, or just practice a few times.  Sometimes I think that if I get too attached to a script, then it will sound choppy when I try and present.  I can't believe that there are only three days left but I am going to try to make the most of them!

Monday, August 19, 2013

After the last Monday morning meeting, I continued working on my presentation.  I got through a lot of it, but I still have to add a lot more pictures and I need to add some more information to the introduction.  Ian helped me a tremendous amount today with editing pictures, so a huge thanks to him! I would also like to write up a script of what I am going to say before I present to the interns on Thursday.  I can't believe how long it is taking me to put this presentation together, but I want to make sure it is good!

Yesterday, Dr. Dube and I analyzed the 15 "n" values that I had calculated from the day before. We found a pattern that as the speed of the CME increased, then the "n" value increased. However, Dr. Dube showed me a journal article that stated that slow CMEs should have "n" values close to two, and that fast CMEs should have "n" values around one. We were able to find a pattern, but it was not supportive of the data already published in the journal article. Dr. Dube and I spent the rest of the day looking at my numbers and we came to the conclusion that we really only needed the velocity of the CME as it traveled towards Earth. I simplified my calculations so that I was only calculating the velocity of the CME with data from the STEREO-A and STEREO-B satellites. When I recalculated the numbers this morning, my "n" values supported what was stated in the journal article I mentioned earlier. I am really happy that Dr. Dube and I were able to locate a pattern in my calculations. I spent the rest of the day making my presentation!! We also had a really fun, final BBQ!!

After the morning meeting I got straight into working on my presentation and I got the introduction, hypotheses, and the approach done.  I haven’t chosen a pretty background yet, and I don’t have any pictures, so it looks really ugly right now.  I got one successful intensity profile vs. proton flux correlation graph, but I couldn’t seem to get any more.  I also went back to my calculations of “n” and finished them up.  I was able to get 15 “n” values and I think I found a pattern that would conclude my research this summer!  I still would like to find two more CMEs that I can track the shapes of so that my final statement, about whether or not drag affects them, is as accurate as possible.  I am just going to keep working on my presentation tomorrow and Friday.  I am also going to keep looking for more CMEs so that my data is accurate and precise.  I also submitted my final abstract for the presentation today!

Tuesday, August 13, 2013

This morning I began searching for two other Halo CMEs to make proton flux and x-ray graphs so that I could track the shape of the CME, however Dr. Dube said that the x-rays probably wouldn't be that much help in determining the shape.  He told me to instead use the program ImajeJ to create intensity profiles that would replace the x-rays.  Then after that, Dr. Dube said that he wanted to make scatter plots that would show if the CME's shape was similar from when it left the sun to when it arrived at Earth (aka correlation graphs).  I only got through one today, but hopefully I can get the other two done tomorrow!

Yesterday was an awesome day!  I got to see all the interns again, and I had a great time at the Mees Observatory!  I got to see a lot of amazing objects in space from the telescope, and I also was lucky enough to see a few meteorites.  Sorry, also, about promising pictures last Friday and never providing them, but I am having some troubles uploading them.  Hopefully I can get some up this week!

Friday, August 2, 2013

I managed to make two graphs today that depict the change in the shape of the CME from when it left the sun to when it arrived at Earth!  The x-ray graph looks a little too perfect so I am not sure that I did it right, but I couldn't find any mistakes in the data.  The proton flux graph came out really well though!  Here are some pictures!  I still have to put all of my data into eureqa to get a generalized formula, and I have to make some more graphs that depict the change of shape in my CMEs.  And then I have to put together the final presentation.  Unfortunately, I am not going to be at work next week because I couldn't find a place to live due the PGA tour, but Bethany and Bob talked to me and are confident in my ability to finish on time.  They also offered to read my outline the Monday that I return so that I can feel organized before I make my PowerPoint!  I am actually pretty sad to leave the internship, but at least I still have two weeks when I get back.  Next week I am probably going to complete my summer reading for school and finish my college essay, so at least something important will get done!

Thursday, August 1, 2013

This morning was pretty frustrating as Dr. Dube asked me to look for some data that I just could not find online.  It took me four hours to locate the proton and x-ray flux data, but I found it eventually!  Due to the fact that the data did not precede 2013, I was unable to find data that matched the CMEs that I had been measuring.  However, Dr. Dube said that was alright, because it didn’t affect the research.  This aspect of research is so that we can track how that shape changes from the beginning of its journey (at the sun) to the end (when it reaches Earth).  The x-rays can be measured only 8 minutes after an ejection, and the proton fluxes are measured from Earth.  The graphs that are created can tell us if the CME stretched, narrowed, etc.  I found a “Halo” CME, but I only started moving the data to excel.  That is something to finish for tomorrow.  Now I will have evidence of a drag effect, and how the shape of the CME changed.  This was a new part that I didn't know I would be able to study!  I feel really lucky that I am getting this amazing opportunity to learn so much about CMEs, especially because I find them extremely interesting!  I once again didn't start my presentation, so that needs to happen tomorrow!

Today, I found my sixth CME (August 15, 2010) so that I could get my first three “n” values.  Fortunately, all the values are very close to each other!  After finishing off the calculations for the August 15 CME, I was asked, by Dr. Dube, to create a spreadsheet that organized all the data neatly.  The spreadsheet took me a while just because I had to calculate the time the CME took to travel in days, hours, and seconds, and halfway through the process I realized that I had done the conversions completely wrong.  Dr. Dube also told me about eureqa, a program that can make a generalized formula for a set of data.  I downloaded it on my computer, but I still need to play around with it to understand how it works.  I am glad that I have at least calculated three “n” values, but it just seems like there is always so much work to be done.  I guess I have to just keep pressing forward and get as much done as possible!

Tuesday, July 30, 2013

I again had a pretty good day!  I was able to finish up the calculations from the June 2, 2011 CME that I found yesterday and then I located two CMEs that happened two days later on June 4.  The two CMEs that I found from June 4 were both labeled "Halos" (meaning that they hit the Earth), however they both were shooting in the wrong direction according to the STEREO-A and the STEREO-B satellites.  Dr. Dube asked me to do the calculations for these CMEs anyway because the GOES instrument presented data that confirmed that these two CMEs did hit Earth.  Maybe there was a reversal of the axes in the STEREO-A and B data.  When I finished the calculations for CMEs, I found another "n" value.  Now I have two different "n" values, so I really only need one more!  Of course it can't hurt to have more, so my guess is that I will end up with more than just three "n"' values.  Having more will only increase the accuracy of  my research.  As usual, I am just going to keep trying to find as many CMEs as I possibly can, and I would like to start some slides for my final presentation tomorrow as well.

Monday, July 29, 2013

This morning I quickly started looking for CMEs and I found a great one that occurred on June 14, 2012!  I finished all the calculations for that CME and compared it to the CME that I found last week to get my first "n" value.  Dr. Dube told me that I had to find "n" two more times using different CMEs, so I spent the rest of the day searching and I actually just found one that occurred on June 2, 2011!  I am going to see how many measurements I can make today, but I will probably do a majority of them tomorrow.  I would also like to start making some background slides for my final presentation so that I can feel a little ahead of schedule! Overall, I think that today went really well!

Friday, July 26, 2013

I finally found a CME!  The first date that I looked at after the morning meeting had a massive CME and I found data for it on STEREO-A, STEREO-B, SOHO, and GOES! I was able to calculate the speed of the CME, find when it actually hit Earth, use the equation d=VCME*t+(1/2a)t2 to get the acceleration, and then plug all the numbers into the overall equation a=A(VCME-Vwind)n. Due to the fact that there are two variables in this equation I need to find another CME so that I can divide out the constant (A) to get a value for the exponent (n). So, tomorrow I am going to continue the search for yet another CME so that I can get a value for “n”. I also just remembered that I need to plot Height vs. Time graphs for the CME that I found today. It feels really good to finally have a productive day and I hope the success continues into next week!

Thursday, July 25, 2013

During the morning meeting, I read my title and abstract out loud to all of the interns along with Bethany and Bob.  Overall, they thought it was pretty good.  They recommended that I shorten it and abbreviate CME instead of write out coronal mass ejection ten different times within only a few sentences! I have to agree I went a little overboard! The rest of the day I spent searching for a CME, but to no avail.  Dr. Dube pitched in to help me find a CME, and he gave me some dates to look at, but the dates he provided were before the STEREO-A and the STEREO-B launched so it would make any calculations less accurate.  I really hope that tomorrow is a better day because I want to be able to do some of the cool calculations, but I can't until I find a CME with data from all of the instruments!

Wednesday, July 24, 2013

Today, I helped Maggie do another trial for her senior project, and I am going back on Monday to do another trial.  After that, I went and talked to Dr. Dube about the issues that had come up yesterday and we both decided that it was best if I just started again on another CME.  I spent the entire day looking for a CME that was present in at least the SOHO, STEREO-A or B, and the GOES instruments.  I had absolutely no luck, unfortunately.  I really can't go any farther in the work that Dr. Dube just gave me until I find one, so it is really crucial that I find a CME as soon as possible.  Hopefully tomorrow will be a more successful day!

Tuesday, July 23, 2013

This morning I went with a few interns to the graduate student symposium.  We listened to a few different talks on topics like fuel cells, Colt guns, and dusty galaxies.  There was also a keynote speaker who talked about the increasing female role at RIT and other colleges and universities.  I finished up my title and abstract today, and Dr. Dube really liked what I wrote!  I can’t believe that it is already week three and we are at our first milestone already!  This afternoon I looked at the August 31, 2012 coronal mass ejection to find the actual time that it took for that coronal mass ejection to reach Earth.  I am a little concerned because the actual time that I got was a lot longer than I expected, so I am probably going to go back and look for mistakes tomorrow.  The data I am looking at now is from the GOES instrument and it provides X-ray, proton, and electron flux graphs that show when the coronal mass ejection actually hit Earth.  I can’t find the proper data for the May 11, 2011 and the September 2, 2012 coronal mass ejections, though, so I may have to go back to the beginning and find another coronal mass ejection to use.

Tomorrow, I am going back to the Color Science Hall to do a second trial for Maggie Castle’s senior project and it is also movie day!  Hopefully I can also resolve some of the problems that arose today!

Monday, July 22, 2013

I got the chance to talk to Dr. Dube today about the second half of the research that I am going to conduct this summer! I have already calculated the speeds of enough coronal mass ejections, and have also found the ideal times that they take to reach Earth.  Now, I have to find how long these different coronal mass ejections actually took to reach Earth.  After comparing the ideal time with the actual time, I can then observe the drag effect that is caused by the solar wind.  My goal this summer is to find out the “exponent of the power law” in the equation; a= A (VCME-Vwind)n   The variables of the equation stand for:

a= acceleration
A= constant
VCME= speed of the coronal mass ejection (km/s)
Vwind= speed of the solar wind (km/s)
n= exponent of the power law

By using various data points I will hopefully be able to calculate the “n” variable and fulfill my task for the summer!

I also went to the Color Science Hall to help Maggie Castle complete her senior project! I had to rate 37 different color samples based on how saturated I thought they were.  It was a little confusing at first but I actually thought it was pretty fun, and I am glad I was able to help her out!

Thursday, July 18, 2013

I finished up the May 5, 2011 CME and my calculated speed was really close to the recorded speed!  I know that I have to look next at how solar wind affects these CMEs, but I want to wait and talk to Dr. Dube about this next step in my research, and he was not here today. I ended up just reading a journal article on the danger of space weather, and another one on a major geomagnetic storm that occurred in September of 1859.  I actually enjoyed reading because I understood a lot of the content, but also was able to learn a lot of new things about the sun! I am not going to be here tomorrow, but hopefully on Monday I can talk to Dr. Dube and start working on the next part of my research!  Also, the first milestone is next Wednesday, and I need to have a title and an abstract prepared. I am definitely going to start that on Monday, but I am pretty comfortable with my topic so it should go smoothly!
